Sony’s PSP Now Also a Wireless Web Browser

TOKYO — Now you can play games, watch porn and browse the Internet on Sony’s PlayStation Portable video game system.

Next week, Sony will roll out a software patch that will make it possible to surf the web.

The PSP, which comes with a built-in antenna for wireless Internet access, is essentially a handheld PlayStation 2 console that features stereo sound and a sharp, 4.3-inch color screen.

Last month, Sony decided to give its blessing for PSP adult videos after a number of announcements from porn distributors in Japan and in the United States. It uses the universal media disc, or UMD, format for playback, enabling the console to play games or videos recorded on optical discs 2.3 inches in diameter.

Ken Kutaragi, chief executive of Sony Corp.'s game unit, said it will launch a white version of the $250 PSP, which is otherwise black. The white version will be sold only in Japan.

The announcements were made during a Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. strategy event that showcased several games for the company's PlayStation 3 console, which will be available in the spring and is expected to compete with new hardware from rivals Microsoft and Nintendo.

So far, Sony said it has shipped 5 million units of the PSP.
